Remember when you were a kid and you only got to sit in the formal living room when company was over or on Christmas morning? It was a very special area of the house meant only for special occasions. I remember very clearly as a kid that my mom’s formal coffee table was very big and had big grown up things on it like a giant bible with gilded pages and a family photo album. If you are like me, you aren’t quite far along enough in your life to have both a formal living room and family room. So we need our coffee tables to be both big and fancy like my mom’s but also practical and easy to use for things like…oh say putting your coffee on them.

Creative Chic: Things to hang on your wall other than pictures.

If there is one thing about home décor that annoys me the most, it’s the fact that so many people hang up generic wall art they find at the store. How many “Starry Night” reprints are currently hanging over American dinner tables? It’s tragic.
Now of course there are a few exceptions but Grumpy Cat, Jesus and dogs playing poker aside, art is meant to be original.
Come on, people! Let’s get creative about the things we hang. After all, we each lead such unique lives and our art should tell that story.
1. Make your favorite quote into art.
Words can be worth a thousand pictures. In college I bought a canvas from a craft store for about 6 bucks, I painted the background gold and then used a bold emerald green to simply paint the words to one of my favorite quotes from literature on it.
It was a simple and unique way to incorporate my love of words into décor.

1. Fresh flowers and plants.
This is of course a no-brainer. There is nothing more spring than flowers. I found these at Trader Joe’s and all were under $5.

So if you are like me, you love a bargain. My favorite stores are Target, Wal-Mart, Homegoods and TJ Maxx. Of course if I’m looking for something like tooth paste I might go to Walmart over Target but if I’m looking for table settings or decorative items I would favor Target. But yesterday I set out on a mission to prove that Walmart has some chic hidden gems. Here’s what I found…
1.Frosted glass mason jars.
So I’ve had Spring on my mind since the weather has been so nice out here in Southern California. I found these in the decorative section and thought they were perfect for a cute Spring table centerpiece. You could put some fake peonies in them like I found here or head down to Trader Joe’s for a cheap seasonal bouquet. For $2.97 you cannot beat these adorable little jars!
